You’ve seen her as...
The smiling, docile wife of Mithun Chakraborty in Shukno Lanka. “After the film’s premiere at Priya, everyone told me that I was very good in the role. So, I am lapping up the accolades!” says Angona Bose.
Who’s she?
A Tamilian brought up in Howrah. “My birth name is Ganeshan Bharti but I changed it to Angona at my husband’s insistence. I shifted to Chandernagore after marriage,” says Angona, who has tasted success on the big screen after a long stint as a theatre actress in Calcutta. She had played Nandini in Tripti Mitra’s stage adaptation of Raktakarabi.
How she landed Shukno Lanka...
“I got a call from Gaurav’s (Pandey, director) office one day. I met him and Gaurav offered me the role. Then 15 days before the shoot, he called me again.”
Being Mithun’s wife...
“My first day of shoot with Mithunda went well, despite the fact that I was nervous like hell! But Mithunda is such an easy-going person that I became comfortable. Matching his style of acting wasn’t difficult since I have acted in two films before — Sharan and Manab Premik Nemai. But Shukno Lanka has been a turning point in my career!” she adds.
Speaking Bengali comes easy to her...
But not Bangal, which her character Bela speaks in Shukno Lanka. “So, Gaurav got a radio jockey to dub for me,” says Angona, who can “read, write and speak Bengali very well”.
What’s up for her next?
“I am open to commercial films, but I am choosy. I believe in doing less work rather than doing bad work. I won’t ever do a film where I am just needed to play the hero’s mother or sister. Give me meaningful roles and I will give 200 per cent!” she signs off.
