For Kaushik Ganguly, making a half-dozen telefilms for ETV Bangla has been like revisiting an old love.

“I began my career as a telefilm director and people have appreciated my work. This is my identity. I am also producing these telefilms... but let’s not call them telefilms anymore because these films have been digitally shot with high-end cameras and are on a par with feature films. Three of my telefilms will be screened in the UFO-equipped theatres later,” said Kaushik, waiting for the relationship-based tales to be beamed every Sunday on ETV Bangla.

First up is Bandhobi, starring wife Churni Ganguly and Chandreyee Ghosh, which airs at 7.30pm on June 6. It’s about two college friends (Churni and Chandreyee) who meet after years and rewind to the days when both were in love with the same man (played by Kaushik Ghosh of Aamra fame).

Up next are Baghnokh, Promotion, Joy Jagannath and Sir. Kaushik is yet to decide on the sixth. All the films have outdoors, like the Sunderbans, Darjeeling and Bolpur.

Baghnokh, featuring Debesh Roy Chowdhury, Ardhendu Banerjee, Kanchana Moitra, Gourab Chakraborty and Kaushik himself, revolves around a retired judge and a cop who meet a criminal they had supposedly executed a long time ago, in the Sunderbans.

Promotion, shot entirely in Darjeeling, deals with single parenthood and features the whole Ganguly family — Kaushik, Churni and their son Ujaan. Saswata Chatterjee plays a pivotal role. Joy Jagannath features Bibhu Bhattacharya and Lama, but Kaushik wants to keep the storyline under wraps right now.

The yet-to-be-shot Sir revolves around a visually challenged schoolteacher and his student (played by Dipankar De and Parno Mittra). “We will shoot it in Kurseong. I had thought of making Sir a feature film but it never materialised. So I made some changes in the script and turned it into a telefilm,” said Kaushik.

The last would “probably be a road movie” which Kaushik plans to shoot after the monsoons.

Having his hands full with telefilms doesn’t mean Kaushik has forgotten the big screen. His next venture will roll on the floors from October. “I have written the first half of the script, but at the moment I am enjoying making the telefilms!” he added.
