The Match Factory has unveiled an exclusive preview trailer for the upcoming Portuguese film Grand Tour ahead of its debut at the Cannes Film Festival next month, offering a glimpse into the cinematic world created by Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes.
“ The trailer for GRAND TOUR is here! Director Miguel Gomes is back in @Festival_Cannes with his new feature film premiering in Competition. Check it out,” the production company wrote on X (previously Twitter) alongside the trailer.
Set in 1917, Grand Tour stars Gonçalo Waddington, Crista Alfaiate, Cláudio da Silva, and Lang Khê Tran. The one-minute-long trailer revolves around a civil servant named Edward who, on the brink of marriage, flees from his intended bride, Molly, setting off on a pursuit across Asia. Interwoven within this narrative are poignant glimpses of contemporary Asia captured on 16mm film.
The official logline of the film states: “Rangoon, Burma, 1917. Edward, a civil servant for the British Empire, runs away from his fiancée Molly the day she arrives to get married. During his travels, however, panic gives way to melancholy. Contemplating the emptiness of his existence, the cowardly Edward wonders what has become of Molly… Determined to get married and amused by Edward’s move, Molly follows his trail on this Asian grand tour.”
Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes is known for his notable works including Tabu (2012), The Tsugua Diaries (2021), and Arabian Nights trilogy (2015).
Grand Tour is among the 19 films which will be vying for the Palme D’or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. It will be competing against Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s debut feature film All We Imagine as Light. Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis and Yorgos Lanthimos’s Kind of Kindness are also part of the competition section.
The other films selected in the competition section at the 77th Cannes Film Festival include Karim Aïnouz's Motel Destino, Andrea Arnold's Bird, Jacques Audiard's Emilia Perez, Sean Baker's Anora, David Cronenberg's The Shrouds, Coralie Fargeat's The Substance, Christophe Honoré's Marcello Mio and Jia Zhang-Ke's Feng Liu Yi Dai (Caught by the Tides).
Gilles Lellouche's L'Amour Ouf, Agathe Riedinger's Diamant Brut (Wild Diamond), Paul Schrader's Oh Canada, Kirill Serebrennikov's Limonov – The Ballad, Paolo Sorrentino's Parthenope, and Magnus von Horn's Pigen Med Nålen (The Girl with the Needle) are also set to feature in the competition section.
