South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook is set to direct a Western titled The Brigands of Rattlecreek, starring Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler and Pedro Pascal, as per US media reports.
Chan-wook is set to preside over the jury at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. According to Deadline, the film will also star Chinese actor Tang Wei, who featured in the filmmaker’s 2022 title Decision to Leave.
The screenplay has been written by S Craig Zahler, with Chan-wook revising the most recent draft.
As per the report, the story follows a sheriff and a doctor who seek revenge against a group of bandits who exploit a torrential thunderstorm to rob and terrorise the occupants of a small town.
The Brigands of Rattlecreek will explore classic themes that Chan-wook explores in his films — vengeance, retribution, the consequences of violence, and the power of memory and family — picturised in the American West.
The film is produced by Bradley Fischer and Chan-wook for Moho Film, with Jisun Back, Mike Medavoy and Georgia Kacandes serving as executive producers.
Chan-wook’s most recent work includes the crime-comedy No Other Choice, which debuted at Cannes, won three Golden Globe nominations and collected over 40 million dollars globally.
The filmmaker has helmed several English-language films like The Sympathizer, The Little Drummer Girl and Stoker.
Chan-wook is best known for helming the South Korean classic thriller Oldboy and The Handmaiden.
