Marriage may have ended, but friendship hasn’t

Anurag Kashyap & Kalki Koechlin

Film-maker Anurag Kashyap and actor Kalki Koechlin — who met and fell in love on the sets of their film Dev.D — separated in 2013 after two years of marriage. However, the two, who work and party in the same circles, have remained friends. Recently, they offered a peek into the easy relationship they share by taping an interview with web portal Film Companion where they not only spoke openly about the breakdown of their marriage (“Losing Kalki has been my biggest loss,” Anurag said at one point), but also had quite a few nice things to say about each other (“You look healthier and happier than before,” she told him). What we loved the most? The sentences they left unsaid, the secret smiles they shared, the way she blushed when he looked tellingly at her…. Awww!

Arbaaz Khan & Malaika Arora

Theirs was a model marriage for 18 years. But Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora haven’t allowed divorce to come in the way of their friendship. The two still hang out together, with pictures of their recent vacay in Mallorca illustrating the cool vibe that exists between them. Malaika is still a regular in the Khan family home and even co-hosted Arbaaz’s 50th birthday bash last year. “Arbaaz is a part of my family, the father of my child. Certain equations don’t change overnight. He will always be an integral part of my life,” Malaika said recently.

Hrithik Roshan & Sussanne Khan

Hrithik and Sussanne, married for 13 years and now divorced for four, have remained thick friends, co-parenting their sons Hrehaan and Hridaan. The two take off on joint vacations and make sure their families mingle and meet, too, as freely as they did when they were married. Sussanne has stood by Hrithik when he got into a public spat with Kangana Ranaut after the Queen actress called him a “silly ex”, even tweeting a picture of Hrithik and herself last year with the words, “There is no allegation or sad plot that can have the weight to triumph over a good soul”.

Aamir Khan & Reena Dutta

“Reena is extremely important and is very much a part of the family and she will always be. I think the bond that we share is not going to break with a piece of paper,” Aamir Khan had said about his first wife Reena Dutta, whom he divorced in 2002 after 16 years of marriage and two kids. Aamir and Reena have always shared a cordial relationship and that recent video of Aamir proposing a toast on Reena’s 50th birthday was heart-warming. The best bit? Aamir’s current wife Kiran Rao is also on great terms with Reena.

Raghu Ram & Sugandha Garg

Roadies man Raghu Ram and his actress wife Sugandha Garg gave us serious #DivorceGoals a few weeks ago, when they ended their 12-year marriage on a cool note. Raghu shared a picture (right) on Instagram of the two together with the words, “Some things never change. Like the love I have for you. Like the fun we have always had together. Nothing ends. It changes and the next phase begins #FriendshipGoals #DivorceGoals.” Sugandha’s reply: “It’s been a pleasure… All of it… I got you boo.” The two have always maintained that they started off as friends and would always like to remain friends. Way to go, guys!

Chris Pratt & Anna Faris

Hollywood’s ‘it’ couple Chris Pratt and Anna Faris broke many fan hearts when they announced their separation last year. The two reportedly remain as close as ever, with Faris recently saying in an interview, “We’re great, and he’s amazing. There is still so much laughter in our lives together, and he is so proud of me, still.” On his part, Pratt wrote the foreword for his ex-wife’s memoir, Unqualified, and they co-parent their five-year-old son Jack, often being spotted at play-dates together.

Heidi Klum & Seal

Singer Seal and supermodel Heidi Klum not only continue to co-parent their four children after divorce but remain close friends. The two often get dinner together with their kids. Last year, Seal was a guest judge on America’s Got Talent that’s also judged by Heidi, and their “electric chemistry” on the show sparked off whispers of a reconciliation.

Bruce Willis & Demi Moore

Hollywood’s power couple through much of the ’80s and ’90s divorced in 2000. Demi went on to marry Ashton Kutcher five years later, with Bruce — who also remarried in 2009 — attending the wedding. When Demi landed in rehab after the breakdown of her marriage to Ashton, it was Bruce who gave her constant support, even opening up his home for her at one point. Bruce and Demi are still good friends, even catching up for dinner with Bruce’s wife Emma Heming for company.

Gwyneth Paltrow & Chris Martin

Their decision to describe their divorce as ‘conscious uncoupling’ met with quite a bit of criticism, but actress Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin have ensured that the breakdown of their marriage doesn’t mar their friendship. Gwyneth has described Chris as “a great ex-husband” and been spotted sharing dinner and drinks together while he was seeing Jennifer Lawrence. Is that because she’s confessed she now sees him as a “brother?” Well!
