There is no stopping PRIYANKA CHOPRA. She sports an Italian look for a French magazine, plays a Marathi mulgi in Kaminay, and has got a cast of her feet at the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum in Italy. A breezy t2 chat...
You have received a clutch of Best Actress awards this year for Fashion. Did you expect so many?
I was hopeful. But it was a mid-way feeling between expecting and not expecting. I’m glad that Fashion has been appreciated and so has my work. This is my first Best Actress award and it feels really special. Though I have won awards for Best Actor in Negative Role and Best Debut, the Best Actress award is special.
What is your next film Kaminay all about?
Kaminay is a very different film. My character Sweety is someone I have never played before. She is a 19-20 year old college-going Maharashtrian girl; Marathi mein pat-pat bolti hai, bahut naughty hai; she is real. She doesn’t have time to get ready and do make-up and all. She slips into her clothes, quickly makes a choti and moves out.
Did you speak Marathi in the film?
Yes, there is a lot of Marathi in the film. Marathi is a difficult language for me, since I didn’t know the language at all. Thanks to Kaminay, I got a chance to learn a new language. But I still don’t know it too well so please don’t ask me to converse in Marathi!
How was it dancing with Shahid Kapur in Kaminay?
I haven’t done a dance-dance number in Kaminay.
Do you think going de-glam is the order of the day in films?
People have been de-glam since the beginning of Indian cinema. Heroines applying make-up can also be termed as a trend. It really depends on how you see it, what kind of connect you make and what character you play. I took my make-up off during Fashion but no one saw it.
You are looking glamorous on the cover of L’Officiel wearing a belt around the neck and shoe-earrings!
(Laughs) Oh yeah, I didn’t notice that; but yeah it is a very Italian look and everyone who has seen the look, has liked it.
Speaking of Italian looks, the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum recently honoured you by asking you to leave a cast impression of your feet...
It really feels great. I’m the first Indian actor, and only the second Indian after Indira Devi, the Maharani of Cooch Behar, to get such an honour. Salvatore Ferragamo is a legendary shoe-maker and impressions of my feet are kept with the likes of those by Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren and Drew Barrymore.
Salvatore is a big name in shoes and bags. How much do you like bags and shoes?
Girls like shoes and bags but for me bags have to be really big. I carry my world in my bag therefore my bags are always heavy. And all girls like shoes — they are my favourite accessory.
