A range of new films, right from dark comedy to sci-fi thriller, are set to hit the theatres this Friday. Here’s all you need to know about the five Hindi, English and Bengali films releasing on January 13.

Directed by: Aasmaan Bhardwaj

Cast: Tabu, Naseeruddin Shah, Konkona Sensharma, Arjun Kapoor, Radhika Madan and Kumud Mishra

Kuttey marks the directorial debut of filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj’s son Aasmaan Bhardwaj. Reminiscent of Vishal’s classic 2009 action-comedy Kaminey, Aasmaan’s heist film revolves around a bunch of men and women looking out for themselves as they try to capture a van full of money. Tabu and Arjun will be seen in the role of police officers while Konkona will be playing a left-wing extremist in this dark comedy thriller.

Directed by: Victor Mukherjee

Cast: Anshuman Jha, Riddhi Dogra, Paresh Pahuja and Milind Soman

Arjun (Anshuman Jha) is a martial arts trainer who moonlights as an animal vigilante. He doesn’t spare anyone who tries to harm his pets. When one of his pet dogs goes missing, Arjun stumbles upon an illegal animal trading racket during his search for his canine. As he tries to expose this illegal trade, he comes face to face with the kingpin (Paresh Pahuja) of the racket. How the vigilante manages to rescue his dog, and what happens to the mind behind the animal trade, forms the crux of the story.

Directed by: Arindam Sil

Cast: Abir Chatterjee, Rituparna Sengupta, Sourav Das, Sauraseni Maitra, Arunima Ghosh and Rajatava Dutta.

Touted as a tribute to 100 years of Bengali cinema, Arindam Sil’s Maayakumari tells the story of one of the leading actresses in the 1940s. Maayakumari (Rituparna) and Kanan Kumar (Abir) are a hit pair on celluloid and their chemistry on screen is the talk of the town. When Maayakumari decides to take a break from acting at the peak of her career, it sets tongues wagging.

Gerard Butler plays a commercial pilot, Brodie Torrance, in this action thriller. Torrance saves his passengers from a lightning strike by making an emergency landing on a war-ravaged island. When some of the passengers are taken hostage by a group of rebels, Torrance seeks the help of Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter), a murder-accused who was being transported by the FBI.

Directed by: Gerard Johnstone

Cast: Amie Donald, Jenna Davis, Allison Williams, Violet McGraw and Kimberley Crossman

M3GAN is a human-like doll, programmed by artificial intelligence to become a child's best friend. It has been designed by Gemma (Allison Williams), a brilliant roboticist. M3GAN can take on many roles — that of a teacher, a friend, a playmate and also a protector. It observes humans and learns their traits. When Gemma is tasked with taking care of her 8-year-old niece, she decides to give her a prototype of M3GAN a chance, which leads to disastrous consequences.
