| Shruti with her doting dad |
She has walked the ramp, sung at clubs in Mumbai and will also debut in a big Bollywood film real soon but not many have really seen Shruti Haasan. Now, featuring in a special music video for Cornetto ice-cream (with the talented music composer-singer Raghav Sachar), the daughter of Kamal Haasan and Sarika will finally be a familiar face. t2 caught up with the multi-talented Shruti to chat about her future plans.
First tell us about this music video which you have just shot for...
The song is called Ho jaane de... and the concept is exactly that — let it happen! The idea is very young, very fresh. The song and the video talk about how the ice cream works as a connect between two people. It’s about a boy who is asking the girl out. The video is about how the ice-cream is the sweet, cute way of doing it.
You must have been aware that this is the first time you were being unveiled on the national network. Why did you pick this particular project?
Well, what made me say yes to it was the fact that Cornetto is a huge brand and I could relate to it. I remember it from my childhood. It was something that seemed very sweet, something which couldn’t go wrong. Also, it makes sense now. I don’t think I can do an ice-cream video later in life!
Are you a big ice-cream person?
Oh yes, I am! I really am (laughs)! I love chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, the basic flavours.
You will make your big Bollywood debut in Soham’s multi-starrer Luck. What drew you to the film as a debut venture?
Honestly, I think a lot of people have thought a lot more about it than I have. It seemed right at that moment. Luck seemed like a film which I would have a lot of fun doing.
Has it been fun? What has the experience been of doing a big Hindi movie in Mumbai?
Wonderful! The whole experience has been wonderful. Luck is an action film and action is something I have always enjoyed watching. And this time I was doing all the action! It was fun.
You sing, you walk the ramp, you are acting in films.... is there one thing which you want to do in the years to come?
I am doing quite a few things (laughs) and you are right, the plate’s getting quite full. But I really believe in taking life as it comes.
But which one do you love doing the most?
All of them actually (laughs)! I have never been able to pick any one. I like having a whole bunch of options and getting to choose the project I would like to do.
What’s happening on the music front?
There’s a lot happening with my band (a rock line-up called Extramentals). We are just getting into the studio to record. I wish I could tell you when the album is out but it’s really early as of now.
Do you enjoy the tag “daughter of Kamal Haasan” or does it got to you?
It’s something I was born with and I am proud of it but I don’t depend on it. It’s nothing to enjoy or get rid of. You are born with it and you learn to accept it as a part of you. More than anything I am proud to be his daughter. I don’t have a problem with it.
But you must be desperate to create your own identity?
Of course, every individual has that drive and I am no exception.
