Steven Spielberg’s The Post, which releases in India on Friday, is also a story on leadership and what it means to lead. Meryl Streep plays legendary The Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham and Tom Hanks the gruff, but brilliant, executive editor Ben Bradlee.
To play Graham, an equally strong headed woman was needed, and Spielberg has admitted he knew instantly when he started reading the script that nobody else but Streep would work. And for Bradlee, only someone like Hanks could fit the bill.
Spielberg said: “Amy Pascal (the producer) had found a script from a new writer Liz Hannah, who had written a story about Katharine Graham. I was you know quite reluctant, but you know kind of, Amy (Pascal) and Stacey (Snider) said, I think you will change your mind when you get to Page 30 and I did.
I started reading it and by Page 30 I started saying Ben Bradlee would be Tom Hanks and Katharine Graham will be Meryl Streep.”
