The Garb
Halloween means you have to wear a costume. It is the one day in the year to experiment with make-up or wear the weirdest outfit you have in your wardrobe. It’s not about buying new clothes, but innovating with what you have.
GenX Recommends:
A crown with a sash — go as the beauty queen (a horror film favourite).
Regular suit with white face powder and red lipstick for the Heath ‘Joker’ Ledger look.
Go wild with make-up for the Lady Gaga look. Or don’t wear any for the Robert Twilight Pattinson look.
Wear a black outfit, use a black shawl as a cape, cut out a mask and you could be Zorro, Antonio Banderas-style!
Wrap yourself in wrapping paper with the tag: “From: God, To: Women”. What are you? God’s gift to women.
Wear a white dress, buy some plastic snakes and become Medusa.
How about a pink outfit with white cotton tail and ears, which will make you a playboy bunny?
Do a ghost appearance by using a white bedsheet with cut-away holes to peep through.
Theme-dress up your pet, too. Bring out his inner beast. The wilder, the wackier.
Wanna get a little more scary? Try smoky eyes with smudged kajal. “Women can try black jumpsuits or dresses and accessorise with blood red lips, chunky red neckpiece and lots of kohl under the eyes,” says model Jessica. Men can opt for long leather jackets and fitted pants. Game for a dare-devil act? Paint your face wild and accessorise with fangs, horns or a pair of wings. “Your party should have a theme dress code and insist that people stick to it! The dress code for Halloween is one of the most essential elements to make it a success,” adds Jessica.

The Playlist
Play spooky numbers to build up the mood. “Any Michael Jackson track is perfect for Halloween,” says DJ Kunal of Venom. Some other favourites:
1. Soundtrack of The Addams Family, Friday the 13th or the Ramsay Brothers Aahat.
2. Thriller by MJ, the king of pop.
3. Tubular Bells, the debut record album of English musician Mike Oldfield, which was eventually chosen for the 1973 film The Exorcist.
4. Psycho’s theme music.
5. Evanescence by Enya. Or any of her songs, really.

The Spookathon
Horror films are a must for all Halloween celebrations. Dim the lights, butter some popcorn and get ready to scream.
GenX Recommends: Scream, Final Destination, Hostel, The Shining, Paranormal Activity, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Raat andall-time classics Psycho and The Exorcist.

Be it Halloween or Holi, no party is complete without a spread of snacks and drinks to down. Since the festival is about being creative, just use everyday items with an ‘evil’ twist and you can serve up special Halloween titbits.
GenX recommends:
Chocolate spider (picture above): Buy readymade chocolate cup cakes or bake them. Then, squeeze any bottled chocolate sauce to make eight legs on the plate and voila! you can make them eat spider.
Graveyard cake: Take a regular chocolate cake, break biscuits into half, write R.I.P on it with icing sugar and stick them in the cake.
There’s more. Don’t waste the leftover seeds from the jack-’-lantern (turn to Page 12); they can be roasted and sprinkled on desserts. Chef Sharad Dewan of The Park believes it’s all about the presentation. “Give your Halloween platter a thematic presentation and look to make it all the more scary,” says the expert. For example, garnish the dishes served with pumpkin rind or prepare a sizzler platter on pumpkin shell.
“Things like Grilled Cottage Cheese (or chicken) Satay with Chilli Chocolate Sauce can set the right mood for the party. Spike the dishes with red and green chillies to spice up the night,” adds the chef.
Go creative with your drink, too. “Try brandy, whiskey or rum-based cocktails, add a touch of red and give the drink a wacky name. Your Halloween toast is ready,” says bartender Irfan Ahmed. Need help with names? How about Halloween Punch or Vampire’s Blood?
P.S: Don’t forget to garnish with artificial bugs. Ewwwwww.
