When we called Geetanjali Thapa around noon on Thursday, the Sikkimese beauty had just woken up and was planning to go back to sleep! Yes, that’s how chilled out she is after bagging the best actress National Award for Liar’s Dice.
Many congratulations...
I am so happy! I cannot express how I am feeling! I was out of the country. I came back this morning and got the news. I think that feeling is still sinking in. I am going to meet my director (Geethu Mohandas). That’s when I am actually going to realise how big this is! I knew that the film had been sent, but I did not follow it up. So, this is like a big surprise, the best surprise in the world!
Liar’s Dice is a simple and beautiful story. A lot of the buzz is also because we were in Sundance (Film Festival) and it is a Mecca for all independent filmmakers. It is not just a story of a guy, a girl or a kid. It has a socio-political message. I never went to a film school. So, these steps are my school. These people are so good at what they do.
You stayed in Calcutta for three years. How do you look back on your Calcutta days?
I was there between 2005 and 2008. I was into modelling and have really fond memories. I remember shooting for Kommal Sood. I had a great time. I was out of school... and college life (The Bhawanipur Education Society College) and all that. I have my relatives there with whom I stayed when I came to Calcutta first. They are very proud of me right now.
And then you suddenly disappeared!
I was there for my college. So, after my graduation, I left. I moved to Delhi. I didn’t look at modelling like a profession. It was more like a part-time job… moonlighting! Now, every time I go to Sikkim, I try to drop by and meet my friends and relatives in Calcutta.
Do you have any plans of coming back to Calcutta and work here?
I don’t know where I want to be or what I want to do in life. I don’t know if this is what I am supposed to be doing. (Laughs) I have no clue where I’ll be in the next few years!

Why?!
Life takes different courses. I’ll just take whatever comes my way. (Laughs)
What about mainstream Bollywood films? Do you have any offers?
I really need to feel for the script. Not that I cannot afford to be choosy, but if I don’t feel in me the need to do it…. It is better to do something you believe in.
What about a Yash Raj film or romancing Shah Rukh Khan?
(Giggles) I don’t know! It would be nice, but I haven’t given it much thought. I can dance in my room! I am taking my time… I mean I am not really young, at 25, but young enough to take my time and choose projects that I like.
So, what are your other pursuits?
I am a real lazy bum! Give me a book and I will just stay curled in bed throughout the day. I’ll just make the book my little cocoon! I also love travelling. I try to do as much as I can, mostly within budget because I have a strict budget.
I just got back from Istanbul today morning. Since I was in Istanbul, I was re-reading all my Orhan Pamuk books. A friend of mine has given me this book about decoding the Quran.
