Singer Falguni Pathak has said that the remake of her classic 1999 song Maine Payal Hai Chhankai by Neha Kakkar lacks the “simplicity” and “innocence” that the original song had, which according to her, could be one of the reasons for the criticism Neha’s latest rendition of the song has been facing online.

“My idea has always been to keep my music videos away from any double meaning references, and even if there was any, I made sure to change it,” said Falguni, who shot to fame with songs like Saawan Mein and Yeh Kisne Jadu Kiya in the late 1990s and early 2000.

Falguni also shared a number of posts on her Instagram story that dissed the new version sung by Neha Kakkar. While Neha’s song O Sajna has found itself in hot water right after its release, the singer, well known for remakes of classic Bollywood songs, shared a cryptic post on her Instagram.

Fifty-three-year-old Falguni said the remake of her iconic song has a sense of “vulgarity” attached to it that wasn’t in the original song. She thanked her fans for their love towards her original song.

“Old songs — their video, the music, the lyrics and even the picturisation — have a sense of simplicity attached to them that mean a lot to viewers,” she said.

Commenting on the “remake culture”, Falguni said, “Some of the remixes are really well made these days.”

Meanwhile, Sony Entertainment released a promo of singing reality TV show Indian Idol 13 in which the two singers are seen sharing the stage. In the short clip, Neha welcomed Falguni for a special Navaratri episode of the show and called her “legendary”.
