Nicole Kidman’s Margaret, an American expatriate living in Hong Kong, embarks on a journey of self-discovery after her son goes missing on foreign soil in the trailer of Prime Video’s upcoming drama series Expats, dropped by the streamer on Tuesday.

The two-minute-46-second-long trailer shows Margaret’s life before and after her tragedy. It begins with Kidman’s voiceover saying how she wants to be independent rather than somebody’s wife or mother. Not wanting to be “defined by tragedy”, Margaret introspects on her life in America, where she felt at home. However, after her traumatic experience in Hong Kong, she is unable to go back as she does not want to “abandon” her son.

Soon, we are introduced to Margaret’s tight-knit group of expat friends in Hong Kong — Hilary (Sarayu Blue), whose marriage is on the rocks and Mercy (Ji-young Yoo), who is looking for a “fresh start” at the age of 24. Together, they navigate the ups and downs of their personal and professional lives.

However, it is revealed that Mercy is to be blamed and held accountable for Margaret’s loss. Margaret spirals into guilt for not watching over her son attentively, while her marital problems with Brian Tee’s Clarke aggravate the situation.

Based on Janice Y. K. Lee’s 1998 novel of the same name, Expats is likely to remind fans of Kidman’s other drama series such as Big Little Lies (2017) and Nine Perfect Strangers (2021).

Helmed by The Farewell director Lulu Wang, Expats is slated to release on Amazon Prime Video on January 26, 2024.
