Punjabi pop music icon Daler Mehndi is all set for his first ever Bollywood film as an actor in Welcome To The Jungle, a sequel to Welcome Back (2015). The Tunak Tunak Tun singer spoke to us about his debut acting project, facing the camera for his music videos, and his plans for 2024.

You will be making your acting debut in the action adventure comedy film Welcome To The Jungle, directed by Ahmed Khan. How did it all come about?

Daler Mehndi: One day, my close friend Ahmad Khan called me with a proposition. He presented the idea with one condition — that I have to say ‘yes’ to the project. He then revealed his desire for me to take on a role in his upcoming film and also expressed a keen interest in having Mika join the project. Since Mika was with me at the time, I suggested Ahmad speak directly to him. Fortunately, Mika agreed, and in the following days, when I had my first meeting with Feroz Nadiadwala, the producer, I was satisfied with my decision. The narration had me in splits. Before we could understand and let it seep in, we were already recording the acapella. The experience was both exciting and humorous. I was onboard, ready to embark on a new journey.

You have been in front of the camera for your music videos for years, so this wasn’t really your very first encounter with a shoot…

Daler Mehndi: That is true but delving into acting and navigating through the demanding schedules is an entirely different experience. I extend my utmost respect to every individual involved in the film and television industry, regardless of their role. The level of hard work put in is truly immense, and I tip my hat to them all.

How did it feel to be in front of the camera and how was it to interact with seasoned actors who are part of the cast?

Daler Mehndi: It was super. Not only the director and producer but the entire cast, including the veteran actors, were very welcoming and very kind. From Johnny Lever to Paresh Rawal, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Arshad Warsi, Rajpal Yadav, Lara Dutta, Disha Patani and Raveena Tandon.

Akshay Kumar Bhaji ensured that a foodie like me was careful with my food. I ate only vegetarian food (his home-cooked meals) throughout my stint there. He would even check the juice I was having, ensuring there was no added sugar. I am deeply grateful for the camaraderie, love and respect that I received on the sets. The schedule went off extremely well.

What do you feel is different about this film?

Daler Mehndi: This film has one of the biggest star cast, creating absolute madness on the sets. There were times when it felt like an enormous party. Challenging, yet incredibly entertaining. The thrill and passion of embarking on this new journey is indescribable... The world’s first acapella by singers and actors together. It's a jungle filled with laughter, sincerity and, above all, entertainment. Look at the unique manner in which Ahmad Khan and Firoz Bhai communicated and unveiled the film. It's unconventional. Who welcomes anyone to the jungle? Yet, here we are.

What are you looking forward to the most in 2024? Any collaborations in the pipeline?

Daler Mehndi: I am looking forward to sharing the music I’ll be creating. Collaborating with Speed, Sher Ali Mehr Ali and other diverse artists will offer a wide range of musical genres for all of you. Expect to see more of me on screen. There are my much-awaited tours as well this year.

I’ll be participating in more music festivals, expanding the musical experience even further. And beyond music, I’m excited to introduce Daler Mehndi Festive Farms, a space dedicated to exploring everything organic. This residency encompasses a diverse range, from organic food and products to fine arts, including both music and art.
