Arindam Sil Decodes Five Posters Of His Debut Film Aborto, Inspired By Ray Films Published 23.02.13, 12:00 AM

This is a direct tribute to Satyajit Ray’s Ganashatru which had Soumitra Chatterjee’s face and lots of hands pointing at him. In Aborto, Tota Roy Chowdhury plays Shyamal, a character inspired from Seemabaddha (where Barun Chanda had played Shyamalendu). It’s as if the whole world is pointing at him and he is answerable to everyone, including his wife Charu (Jaya Ahsan, whose character is inspired by Charulata). There are face cut-outs of the rest of the characters in black and white. Tota here is also answerable to Ritwick Chakraborty (Resshmi Ghosh’s brother Siddharta; Dhritiman Chaterji was Siddharta in Pratidwandi), Saswata Chatterjee (Runu, Tota’s competitor; Baren Roy had played the character in Seemabaddha), Resshmi Ghosh (Duli, Tota’s secretary; Simi Garewal played Duli in Aranyer Din Ratri) and Abir Chatterjee (Hari Bose, a cricketer and Charu’s friend; Shamit Bhanja had played Hari in Aranyer Din Ratri). Aborto releases on March 1.

While Abir is in black and white staring at the sky, Jaya and Tota are busy flying a kite. Tota has always been fond of kite-flying because he has always wanted to reach the top, to fly high. But here his wife Charu holds the latai, so no matter how high Tota flies he remains bound to Charu.

Tota’s face is coloured but Jaya and Abir’s are in black and white. That’s because Abir shakes up Tota and Charu’s lives.

This poster is inspired from Ray’s Charulata. The binocular signifies Charu’s loneliness. Basically the characters in Aborto are caught in a vortex. Each and every character has a lot of shades but the central character is Charu, that’s why she is there in every poster. Also, I have used very earthy colours in the posters like orange, yellow and green because my characters are very rooted.

Saswata’s isn’t a very happy face on this poster. He is Shyamal’s direct competitor. He causes a lot of tension in Shyamal’s life.
