Communication remains by far the most popular application of mobile wireless technology today. Mobile and wireless technology helps you connect to people wherever and whenever. In addition to the traditional modes of voice and text paging, new communication applications are also emerging with mobile e-mail and instant messaging. Another important new application is mobile Internet access which makes information available everywhere. Internet access to news, weather, health, sports, shopping, business, education, and entertainment is becoming available on a variety of different portable devices and are supported through several competing types of wireless service. New models of cell phones, two-way pagers and convergence devices also support Internet access through wide area cell phone networks.
It has a wide range of application. For example, wireless devices can open doors, adjust room lighting and temperature, purchase a soft drink, and operate an ATM. Mobile wireless monitoring applications can also send information and sensor data that can help in healthcare management and equipment maintenance.
What do I have to do?
Wireless and mobile technologists are involved in developing, debugging and integrating wireless technology. Their strategic objective is to create and deliver effective processes and technology solutions, which would enable clients to meet their critical business requirements.
They also deliver protocol stack softwares and products based on GSM, GPRS, 3G and 4G technologies. The services include making telecom software, mobile communication software, (GSM/GPRS/UMTS/CDMA2000/VoIP/Bluetooth/HSDPA/4G), mobile application software like J2ME, BREW, SYMBIAN, WinCE, PALM, RapidPlus, SS7 stacks and application, etc.
Mobile wireless devices support a wide range of applications spanning voice and data communication, remote monitoring, and position finding. Examples of current mobile wireless products include cell phones, pagers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), global positioning systems (GPS) and portable computers. Although there are significant accessibility concerns, mobile wireless devices offer tremendous potential for assisting people with disabilities. Mobile wireless technology, and its applications can also be used to assist rehabilitation, health management, independent living, and quality of life. Mobile wireless communications are now a major piece of the enterprise telecommunications puzzle.
What should I study?
You should have an engineering degree in electronics/electrical/electronics and communication/electronics and instrumentation/computer science and engineering/ information technology or equivalent.
With significant advances in wireless communications, the stage is set to enable anytime, anywhere, any form access to the Internet. The third generation of wireless networking has projected wireless multimedia into the mainstream that would have a deep and lasting impact on the way people communicate.
Technology advances in signal processing, component miniaturisation and battery-life extension have made devices smaller and cheaper, and this trend is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. Wireless Ethernet, also know as Wi-fi, will continue to expand. Bluetooth cable-less device communication functions will co-exist with Wi-fi, and may offer competition for wireless Internet access. PDA-driven wireless for healthcare will continue to expand. Wireless will begin to approach “Star Trek” type communications, with smart web and environment-aware features.
