Calcutta, Oct. 6: Microsoft plans to roll out more 4G-enabled handsets in India this year across all segments.

"India is poised to be one of the leading 4G markets owing to the exponential growth of smartphones and the growing access to Internet," said Kislay Kumar, director of sales (east), here today.

The company today launched its cheapest 4G-enabled smartphone, Lumia 640 LTE, at a price of Rs 17,399. It has a 13MP camera, 5.7-inch HD screen and Windows 8.1 operating system.

"We believe the switch from 3G to 4G connectivity would be much faster than 2G to 3G adoption as smartphones had not taken off well during the launch of 3G. As a result, people were not dependent on data. However, today people are using data all the time. Therefore, anything that makes access to the Internet easier would be welcomed by data users," Kumar said.

Microsoft will retail the smartphone with bundled offer from Bharti Airtel till December.
