Calcutta, Jan. 27: Industry chamber Assocham wants the government to make some big- bang declarations in the budget such as an increase in public spending in the infrastructure sector.

"If the government does not take the public spending and infrastructure investments up by several notches, the economy will soon catch the Chinese flu," Assocham president Sunil Kanoria said here today.

He said in poor governance in the last five years has led to major scams in 2G spectrum auction and coal allocation.

"With the new government, things are expected to improve. In fact, the Chinese economy that grew so fast in the last few years, is now witnessing a slump and this is impacting the world economy as well," Kanoria said. "I think India now has a great opportunity to emerge as the largest and the fastest growing economy in the world."

He said efforts should be made to get the goods and services tax (GST) bill passed in Parliament.
