Police have decided to post 20 women cops on duty round the clock at the National Institute of Technology after a daily wager engaged in the ongoing construction work on the campus premises allegedly molested a girl student on Saturday.

The city police have also asked the NIT administration to take a few steps to secure the safety of students.

"I have asked the NIT administration to shift the labourers residing in the under-construction hostel in the campus in which the incident had taken place on Saturday late evening," senior superintendent of police (SSP) Manu Maharaaj said on Tuesday.

"The presence of outsiders in the campus always poses a risk to the students living in the campus, especially girls. While the labourers should be removed, 20 female cops will be present in the campus for a few days for the time being for security purposes."

He added that the police have also told the NIT administration to ensure that CCTV cameras with night recording facility are installed at different locations in the campus without any delay. "The installation of the cameras is very important as it can help the police in case of any untoward incident in many ways including identifying the perpetrator," the SSP pointed out. "However, the most important point for now is to shift the labourers from the institute campus and the police have asked the institute to work on it immediately."

At around 10.15pm on Saturday, a man had allegedly tried to abduct a girl student who was talking on her phone at one of the three girls' hostels. Two other students, who were coming back to their rooms after having dinner, raised an alarm after which the man ran away. A team of cops led by deputy superintendent of police (town) Kailash Prasad had reached the campus, located at Ashok Rajpath under the Pirbahore police station's jurisdiction, around midnight and had to face the ire of the students.

An official at NIT, who requested anonymity, accepted that there are no CCTV cameras on campus.

"However, it (installing CCTV cameras) is in process though no specific date can be set for now," the official added.

Police sources said the girl who was assaulted on Saturday has not yet been able to identify her attacker.

"Today, the men working in the campus were yet again produced before the victim for an identification parade but she was not able to identify the attacker. The girl says someone held her from behind and so she was not able to identify the person," said an officer investigating the case.
