A woman was robbed of all her ornaments in a swift but silent action in the Mohini Mor area that even flummoxed the police officers.

Sukhda Devi (50), a resident of Punaichak, had reached Mohni Mor in a rickshaw around 11am when an unknown young man approached her, who was entering a lane in order to buy some clothes. “The man came up with a curious tale of a gang. According to the man, the gang operates only some blocks away and rob passers-by of their valuables. With Sukhda Devi getting frightened, the man suggested that she should take off her ornaments, which comprised a gold chain and a pair of gold earrings. He also advised her to tie those carefully at one end of her sari — not an uncommon practice by women. Sukhda Devi immediately took off all the ornaments and tied those at one end of her pallu,” an officer of the Buddha Colony police station said.

With Sukhda Devi finding it a bit difficult to tie them, the man offered help. “The man took all the ornaments and tied it to her pallu. Sukhda Devi thanked him for the same and the man disappeared. Around 15 minutes after when she thought of wearing the ornaments again, Sukhda Devi was surprised to see that there was no jewellery but a piece of stone tied to her pallu. She raised an alarm but it was too late for even the local residents to act. Later, her son came to the police station and lodged an FIR,” the officer added.
