Doctors on Thursday claimed Baisakhi Ray Choudhary’s health has improved, but the 24-year-old hardly felt better a day after she tried to commit suicide.

Baisakhi consumed poison in front of the police chief’s office on Wednesday after the state women’s commission refused to accept her petition written in Bengali. She had accused her in-laws of harassment. She was taken to Patna Medical College and Hospital. Till Thursday afternoon, Baisakhi’s in-laws had not turned up to see her.

Baisakhi said she hoped police would help her to enter her in-laws’ home in the Alamganj locality of Patna City.

“I am feeling better but my vision is blurry. The police have kept my cellphone and I do not know when I will be released from the hospital. There has been no change in my situation. I have been ousted from my husband’s place and they don’t want me to live with them. You can see that they did not come to the hospital to see me. I am trying to contact the police and hope they would help me return to my home,” she told The Telegraph.

Baisakhi is originally from Khardah in North 24 Parganas district of Bengal, around 21km north of Calcutta. The women’s commission members had rejected her petition on Wednesday and asked her to get it typed in Hindi. Then she had gone to the senior superintendent of police’s office. However, a women’s commission team, which visited her on Thursday evening, has assured her of justice.

The Telegraph tried to contact Baisakhi’s husband, but he did not receive phone calls. The police said they would contact her in-laws.

“We have her details and are verifying facts. The woman’s parents, who are in Calcutta, have been contacted too. In her initial statement, she had said that her in-laws were not treating her well and she was being abused. Even her husband was not talking to her, she had alleged. On Wednesday, she escaped from the house and had gone to the commission. The police will get in touch with her in-laws and she would be restored at her home,” a police officer said.
