Patna police on Friday rescued 22-year-old Asmita Ranjan, who had gone missing from the house of her in-laws in the Gandhi Chowk area on February 16.
Asmita was found alone in a house in the Nala Road area, under the jurisdiction of Kadamkuan police station, around 7km from the house of her in-laws. On her body were blade wounds. The police are also clueless about the owner of the house from where Asmita was found.
The police said they acted on a tip-off and recovered Asmita. She was rushed to Patna Medical College and Hospital.
Though her statement is yet to be recorded, the police said she had told them that her husband, Sushant Kumar, has kept her confined and tortured her.
“Asmita got married to Sushant, a resident of Gandhi Chowk area under the jurisdiction of Pirbahore police station, in December last year. After she went missing, her family lodged an FIR on February 16 against her in-laws,” said a police officer.
He added: “In the FIR, it was stated that her in-laws used to torture her and demand dowry. Asmita’s family also suspected that she had been killed and her body had been disposed of.”
According to the FIR, Sushant, who works as a technician for the railways and is posted at Jhansi, had been demanding a car.
“On February 15, Sushant and Asmita visited the house of her parents at Langartoli under the jurisdiction of Kadamkuan police station. Sushant had asked her father to give him a car. The next day he called his in-laws to tell them that Asmita was missing,” said the officer.
Investigating the FIR, when the police went to Sushant’s house on February 18, they found it locked. “All of Asmita’s in-laws, and her husband had fled. Her family had alleged that they had killed her and buried the body in the house. We got permission from the magistrate and searched the house but found nothing,” said the officer.
“According to her initial statement, her husband had confined her in the house at Nala Road and assaulted her. He had also slashed her with a blade,” added the officer.
She was not given food and was forced to drink liquor when she asked for water.
The officer added: “Investigations are on. We are waiting for the woman to recover and make an official statement. Arrests would be made thereafter.”
