A 26-year-old married woman was kidnapped from a village in Bhojpur district and repeatedly raped by three youths in neighbouring Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, before she escaped from their clutches and reached Ara government railway police (GRP) station on Tuesday evening.
On Wednesday, the woman, said to be a resident of Jagdishpur police station area in Bhojpur district, was produced in the court of additional chief judicial magistrate at Ara, which ordered the police to send her to the local sadar hospital for medical tests. She also revealed in the court the names of her tormentors, who were said to be absconding.
Jagdishpur police station house officer (SHO) Baidya Nath Choudhary said on Wednesday that the woman was kidnapped two days ago from her ancestral house. Two neighbours - Rajesh Singh and Raghunath Singh - offered her prasad (food offered to deities) laced with intoxicants, on eating which she fainted.
Then another resident, identified as Om Prakash, bodily lifted her into a sport utility vehicle (SUV) and they left for an unknown destination. When she regained consciousness, she found herself confined in a room. The trio took turns raping her over the next two days. On Tuesday, she managed to escape from their clutches, boarded a train and reached Ara railway station.
To her shock, some associates of Rajesh and Raghunath again tried to abduct her from the railway station premises. She raised an alarm following which Government Railway Police personnel reached the spot and saved her. On seeing the police, the kidnappers fled. Later she narrated her ordeal to the GRP officials, who informed Jagdishpur police.
The SHO of Jagdishpur police station said the woman's father, who worked with a private firm in New Delhi, had lodged a case of kidnapping. "Since the girl's statement under Section 164 of CrPC had been recorded, efforts are on to nab her," the in-charge of Jagdishpur police station told The Telegraph over phone on Wednesday.
A senior police officer said a police team would be sent to Varanasi to locate the place where the crime was committed. "Raids have been intensified to seize the SUV used in the crime," he said. The woman, he said, had married last year and had arrived to visit her parents a week ago.
A police official posted at Ara GRP said: "Since the woman belonged to Jagdishpur police station area, we handed her over to Jagdishpur police after completing legal formalities. She was frightened."
The woman's father has said he would fight for justice. "This is very unfortunate. The incident has shattered me from within. I will not allow the accused to go scot-free."
