Patna: Farmers in East Champaran, Darbhanga, Jehanabad and Nawada are set to get tips from experts when it comes to interpreting medium-range weather forecast in a better way to make its use in farming-related decisions.

The initiative on this front has been taken by India Meteorological Department (IMD), which jointly organised a five-day training programme in collaboration with the Bihar Agriculture University, Sabour, to discuss ways of making weather forecasting data more useful for the farming community.

Two international organisations - International Research Institute on Climate and Society, US, and Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (RIMES), Thailand, - have extended support in the programme, which concluded on Friday.

People from Krishi Vigyan Kendras, agriculture universities, agriculture department and also from non-government organisations working in the selected districts had been invited at the programme during which they were given training in a dozen modules related to use of weather forecast information.

RIMES chief scientist on climate application G. Srinivasan said: "People who were trained in the programme would now fan out to the four districts and would train farmers on how to make best use of the weather forecast for minimising the impact of weather-related events on farming."
