Bhagalpur, Nov. 6: A daylong bandh by the BJP to demand the arrest of a doctor who allegedly molested a woman patient ended peacefully a day after the police issued an arrest order.
Late on Wednesday, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Vivek Kumar issued an order for the arrest of Mrityunjay Kumar, associate professor of surgery at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH) and owner of Tapashwi Nursing Home in Adampur area. The Bhagalpur additional superintendent of police found the allegations the woman patient levelled against the doctor to be true, prima facie. Also, two compounders, Anil Thakur and Mangalam, were arrested from the nursing home. The woman patient had named them as co-accused in her FIR.
Senior lawyer Satyanarayan Pandey, who filed anticipatory bail on behalf of the doctor in the court of district and sessions judge, said the plea had been rejected. His client would approach a higher court now.
Tension ran high on Thursday as the BJP, ABVP, Yuva Shakti workers and people from different social organisations enforced a bandh. Business and other establishments remained shut. Vehicles stayed off the road. Bandh supporters burnt tyres. There was heavy deployment of force.
Some supporters of the accused doctor took out a procession under the banner of Buddhijibi Manch (intellectual forum). The police averted a showdown when bandh supporters confronted Manch supporters near Kotwali Chowk.
The CPI-ML(Liberation)’s Bhagalpur district unit began a fast-unto-death at Station Chowk to press for the doctor’s immediate arrest and termination of his job at JLNMCH.
Another rape charge
SSP Vivek Kumar expressed ignorance about another woman who registered a complaint in the court of chief judicial magistrate on Wednesday, alleging that the same doctor, Mrityunjay Kumar, had raped her inside the nursing home on July 13, when she had gone there for treatment.
