Patna: A sub-inspector posted at Janipur police station on the outskirts of Patna was found drunk on duty and arrested for negligence of duty and violating the provision of new excise and prohibition law.
The police officer, identified as Madan Mohan Jha, created a scene near Neura village after drinking alcohol on Holi. Jha was assigned to take action against those indulging in hooliganism and driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol during the festival on Friday. Instead, he couldn't restrain and took alcohol.
What was more astonishing was that the police officer started dancing and singing Bhojpuri songs at a public place. A local resident captured the cop's histrionics on his mobile and sent the video clip to the senior superintendent of police (SSP).
Taking a strong exception, the acting SSP, Lallan Mohan Prasad, put Jha under suspension and recommended departmental proceedings against him for dereliction of duty and violating the Bihar Excise and Prohibition Act, 2016.
A officer posted at Janipur police station told The Telegraph that the Katihar district resident was taken into custody and put into the lock-up at the police station. Later, he was produced before a local court, which forwarded him to judicial custody.
Jha was posted at Janipur police station for about three years. "We had not noticed such behaviour of Jha on earlier occasion. But he committed an offence and disciplinary action was taken against him," said the station house officer (SHO) of Janipur police station, Mohan Prasad.
The SHO confirmed that the arrested sub-inspector was sent to jail on Saturday. He was earlier sent to the local government hospital for medical test to ascertain alcohol consumption. "Further action will be taken against him on the basis of evidence," he said.
