Mumbai, Aug. 26: Lalu Prasad will undergo two heart surgeries at Asian Heart Institute (AHI) at Bandra Kurla Complex in suburban Mumbai tomorrow, the doctors treating him said this evening.
Vijay D’Silva, medical director, AHI, said all the required investigations on the RJD chief were completed, and the doctors’ panel led by renowned heart surgeon Ramakant Panda has decided that he would undergo aortic valve replacement (AVR) and aortic repair procedures tomorrow.
“Laluji has been diagnosed with aortic stenosis and we will be operating on him tomorrow morning. The procedure will take over five hours,” D’Silva said.
During the AVR procedure, an artificial valve will replace the non-functional aortic valve while the repairs would be done simultaneously.
This morning, D’Silva had said cardiac surgery was necessary on the former Bihar chief minister but a decision on what kind of surgery would be taken later in the evening after some more medical reports are received.
His close aide Ashok Singh, who is camping here along with Rabri Devi and her daughter, said: “Laluji has tremendous will power and we have faith in the Asian Heart Institute team of doctors.”
Lalu flew to Mumbai yesterday morning even as the results of the Bihar by-elections began trickling in.
The RJD’s alliance with archrival Nitish Kumar’s JDU and the Congress helped the alliance win in six of the 10 Assembly segments, which the BJP had captured during the Lok Sabha sweep.
