Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) and Central University of South Bihar (CUSB) will launch LLM (master of law) courses from the next academic session.
At present, the state's lone national law university offers courses in bachelor of arts (BA-LLB) and bachelor of business administration (BBA-LLB).
However, unlike its two other courses where admission is carried out based on the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) score, CNLU will hold its own admission process for the LLM course.
Students pursuing LLB can also opt for a specialisation in particular law topics such as business law, corporate law, criminal law, environment law, etc.
CUSB has already invited applications for its postgraduate courses.
CNLU registrar S.P. Singh said: "The university will launch the LLM course as part of its expansion plan. Students opt for the LLM course as they can join law universities immediately after clearing the National Eligibility Test (NET)."
CLNU was established on August 15, 2006. CNLU sources said the university's focus on launching undergraduate courses could be a reason for its delay to launch the LLM course.
Singh said: "The varsity launched its BA-LLB course immediately after its inception while the BBA-LLB course was launched in 2013. It had also decided to increase the number of seats from 80 to 140."
Students were delighted with the news.
Ankit Jaisawal, an LLB student at Patna Law College, said: "It's a fact that a student with an LLM degree will have more knowledge in a particular subject than an LLB student. An LLM student can also opt for specialisations in business law, corporate law, criminal law, etc."
Specialisations help a student to have an upper edge in judiciary, legal teaching and in corporate houses.
National Law School of India University in Bangalore offers a specialisation in business law while National Academy of Legal Studies and Research in Hyderabad offers a specialisation in corporate law.
National Law University in Odisha and Gujarat National Law University in Gandhinagar are a few of the universities that offer LLM courses at present.
The Hidayatullah National Law University, set up in 2003, offer an LLM course with a specialisation in environment law.
