Training to prevent boat mishaps

A three-day training programme to curb boat mishaps started at the National Inland Navigation Institute at Gai Ghat in Patna City on Wednesday.

Patna: A three-day training programme to curb boat mishaps started at the National Inland Navigation Institute at Gai Ghat in Patna City on Wednesday.

Vinay Kumar Rai, deputy secretary, state transport department, inaugurated the programme organised by the state disaster management department. The transport department is the nodal agency of the programme.

Administrative officers of three districts, Patna, Saran and Sheohar, are taking part in the programme along with officials of the transport department, the motor vehicle inspector, and the department of statistics. Altogether 22 officers are taking part in the training programme.

The officers are being imparted training in the process of boat registration, surveying and licensing.

The officers, including sub-divisional officers (SDOs) and circle officers of the three districts, are being made aware of the nitty-gritty of The Model Boat Rules, 2011.

The training includes information about different parts of boats, their loading capacity, arrangement of lights at nights, safety equipment for passengers onboard, lifesaving equipment and availability of fire-fighting tools.

On the concluding day of the programme, vice-chairman of the state disaster management authority Vyasji will distribute certificates among the trainees.

NINI administrative officer Arun Vir Dhanda said that institute principal captain Suman Sahay, captain Vinod Kumar and chief engineer Raman Kumar have been providing training to the officers. The next round of training will be conducted from March 14-16 and will involve officers from Begusarai district.

The training is being imparted keeping in view the recent boat mishaps in the state in which several people have lost their lives.
