Patna, Aug. 21: Dentistry is a constantly evolving field and dental practitioners should try to keep themselves updated on latest advancements in the field to be able to offer best treatment to patients.

D. Mazumdar, the president of Dental Council of India, expressed these views during a continued dental education programme in Patna today. Earlier, the Indian Dental Association (IDA), Patna, felicitated Mazumdar for being the first one to ascend to the coveted post from the eastern zone.

The veteran dentist from Calcutta also gave a presentation on endodontic surgery and laser usage in dentistry during the programme in which over 150 dentists from Patna Dental College and Hospital (PDCH) and Buddha Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital participated.

“Laser has been used in dentistry since 1994 to treat a number of dental problems. These lasers are different from cold lasers used in phototherapy for the relief of headache, pain and inflammation. These rays are used to treat dental problems like tooth decay, gum diseases, biopsy or lesion removal and tooth whitening. However, there is a need to remain cautious about the use of laser for treating these dental problems,” said Mazumdar.

He added: “All lasers work by delivering energy in the form of light. When used for surgical procedures, the laser acts as a cutting instrument or a vaporiser of tissue that it comes in contact with. When used in tooth-whitening procedures, the laser helps to strengthen the bond between the filling and the tooth. When used in tooth-whitening procedures, the laser acts as a heat source and enhances the effect of tooth-bleaching agents.”

Talking about endodontic surgery, Mazumdar said it includes surgical procedure used to remove inflammation and infection from teeth roots or surrounding area to repair a given problem.

Dr Sovendu Jha, continuing dental education, representative said that to promote competitive spirit among young and budding talent in dentistry, IDA was also giving token of appreciation to the best outgoing students in first-, second-, third- and final-year BDS Magadh University examinations held in 2010.
