Many flood victims from Bihar, who were rescued in Jammu and Kashmir, have not yet reached home because of lack of return train tickets.
About 46 people lodged at Bihar Bhavan in New Delhi are waiting for railway tickets so that they could return home. The Bihar government is providing food and lodging. The state government is also providing Rs 1,000 to those person who want to arrange tickets for themselves.
The state officials are in touch with the Railway Board to get confirmed tickets for the rescued people.
The principal secretary of the disaster management department, Vyasji, told The Telegraph: “We are in contact with the railway board to facilitate tickets for the rescued people. We are also providing Rs 1,000 each to those who wish to arrange tickets for themselves. But we cannot ask anyone to travel with general tickets. Reservations may take some time. All are safe in Delhi and they would go home once the tickets are arranged.”
Jaiprakash Sinha, a resident of Darbhanga’s Panda Sarai, about 175km northeast of Patna, said: “I could get in touch with my family members only a week after they were rescued and brought to Delhi on Friday evening. Eighteen members of my family, including four children, were trapped in the floods. I succeeded in contacting them on Friday evening. But I am still anxious about their arrival in Bihar.”
He added: “Though my family members are lodged at Bihar Bhavan, they find themselves in misery in the absence of railway tickets. Till I see my family members, I cannot sit in peace. The Union government has been able to provide most of the relief materials but our state government is lagging behind.”
Senior railway officials, however, were not available for comment.
According to data with the state disaster management department, close to 400 people were stuck in the northern state. Last Monday, the disaster management department released three helpline numbers (0612-2217305, 0612-2217303 and 0612-2217304).
An official, however, said only 0612-2217305 was working on Tuesday, as the remaining two were hit by a technical snag.
The Bihar government has announced a relief of Rs 10 crore for Jammu and Kashmir. Chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi said the money will be given from the chief minister’s relief fund.
