Well-deserved medals, competitions, music and some advice — the past couple of weeks had them all around campuses in the city.
Famous DJs set the dance floor on fire at one tech cradle, while students of another put their brawn to the test at a weightlifting competition in Haryana. It was not all fun and games though, as teachers also discussed ways to improve the quality of education, and ways to incorporate the old methods of teaching in today’s world.
Robots & music
Technika ’17, the annual techno-cultural extravaganza organised by Birla Institute of Technology, Patna, concluded on March 11.
The technical section of the fest that started from March 8 was divided into five categories — Electronica, Electrica, Mechanica, Civilica and Informatica. The departments of electronics and communication engineering, electrical and electronics engineering, mechanical, civil, and computer science and engineering conducted the events, respectively.
The main attraction was robotics round that required participants to design and realise autonomous and manual robots. First-year students dominated over their seniors in the events, and went on to win the three competition rounds.
YSF (Youth Speak Forum) where three international speakers from Brazil, Ghana and Kenya spoke was another hit at Technika ’17. The student-speakers talked about youth problems in society.
The techno-cultural fest ended with a DJ night with a live performance by DJ Aceaxe of Sunburn fame.
Gold for NIT
The team from National Institute of Technology (NIT) Patna participated at the All India Inter NIT Weightlifting and Powerlifting competition held at NIT Kurukshetra in the first week of March.
Under the guidance of Avishek Baisya, assistant sports officer, NIT-Patna, Kumar Aman won gold in the 93kg category weightlifting and powerlifting. Saurabh Kumar won silver in 105kg category powerlifting at the event held from March 6 to 8.
“This is for the first time that a team from NIT-Patna participated in the tournament. The team performance was very good,” said Baisya. “From next year we will try to win more medals for the institution.”
The commendable performance from the NIT-Patna students came on the heels of the institution being gifted a modern gymnasium around four months ago. The NIT-Patna gymnasium at the students’ activity centre on campus is equipped with all modern gadgets and equipment.
Aman, the 93kg-category gold medallist, said: “Sports activities at educational institutions, especially technical institutions, are of great help as sports help in the overall development of an individual.”
Better education
The Central University of South Bihar’s School of Education organised a workshop on “Teaching-learning strategies & assessment techniques” under the Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching scheme of the Union human resource development ministry.
The workshop aimed to provide teachers a platform to discuss teaching, learning and assessment techniques and practical issues related to these towards improving the quality of education.
Pro-vice-chancellor O. P. Rai inaugurated the workshop at the Patna campus on March 9. He lit the inaugural lamp and discussed practical problems in the education system such as absent students, and low achievement.
He suggested educators to think how the ancient education system can be incorporated in the modern era to improve the quality of education.
“At present, society is passing through a very crucial stage where corruption and materialism are at its peak and in this situation, only honest and committed teachers may be the ray of hope,” Rai said.
Rekha Agrawal, head and dean, School of Education, Central University of South Bihar welcomed the guests and participants and introduced them to the Union ministry’s scheme.
She started the first session on “Instructional objectives and innovative teaching techniques”.
Kaushal Kishore, faculty in the education department of the central university, explained how traditional and modern techniques of assessment can be practically used in another session.
