Patna, July 26: Union agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh today hit out at Tejashwi Yadav on Twitter, "enlightening" the deputy chief minister about what the Narendra Modi government had done for Rajendra Agriculture University in Pusa, Samastipur.

The Union minister posted eight tweets on the progress carried out by the Modi government for the university's infrastructure development after the Centre and Bihar signed an MoU to convert it into a central university last year. His tweets were in response to a series of tweets from Tejashwi four days ago attacking the Union government over the slow progress in Rajendra Agriculture University.

On July 23, one of Tejashwi's tweets from his Twitter handle, @yadavtejashwi, read in Hindi: " Afsos hain ki Bihar se kendriya krishi mantri hone ke bawjood Rajendra Krishi Vidhyalaya ko Kendriya Krishi Vishwavidhyalaya mein parivartan karne ke liye kendra gambhir nahi (It is very sad that despite that the Union agriculture minister belongs to Bihar, the Union government is not serious in granting central university status to Rajendra Agriculture University)."

On Tuesday, Radha Mohan asked Tejashwi to read the agriculture department files to ascertain the progress in the university. He added that the Union government had already appointed the vice-chancellor, registrar and controller of examinations.

Radha Mohan, who represents East Champaran in Lok Sabha, added that in July this year, the Union cabinet had okayed changing the varsity name to Dr Rajendra Prasad Central Agriculture University.

The varsity got a new lease of life in January last year after the central and the state governments signed an MoU to convert it into a central university. The MoU, signed in the presence of Radha Mohan and then chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, fulfilled a longstanding demand; the state had first demanded the central university tag in December 2009.

The Union cabinet, however, okayed the central university status only in May this year.

The varsity is the third agricultural university in the country - after Central Agricultural University (Imphal) and Rani Lakshmi Bai Central Agricultural University, Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh) - to have central university status.

The university, set up in 1978 at Tirhut College of Agriculture, Dholi, was shifted to Pusa in 1981.
