Patna: A 17-year-old-girl is suspected to have committed suicide by hanging herself from the fan in her room at Indira Nagar under the jurisdiction of Patliputra police station in Patna on Sunday.
Police said the incident came to the fore when victim Sweety Kumari's brother returned home after a night-stay outside. The siblings stayed together in the house. Sweety was studying in Class X at a local public school.
The station house officer (SHO) of Patliputra police station, K.N. Tiwari, said no suicide note has been found from the room in which Sweety was found hanging from the ceiling fan. A forensic team visited the spot and has collected samples.
"The reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained. The girl hailed from Nalanda's Hilsa. Her family has been informed and the body has been sent to Patna Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem," he said.
Tiwari said the body would be handed over to the relatives once they reach Patna from Nalanda. "The victim's college-goer brother was away when the incident occurred," the SHO said.
The police would now get the call details of the mobile phone of Sweety. The neighbours didn't suspect any foul play and reportedly told the police that when the brother returned he found the room locked from inside.
The brother then called on a few neighbours before opening the door.
Incidents of suicide have increased in Patna of late.
At least two dozen incidents of suicide, mostly involving teenagers, have been recorded in Patna since January this year. Frustration, poor results in competitive examinations and affairs, are cited as major reasons behind the rise in suicide cases.
