Patna: Various school teacher associations have decided to observe a black day on September 5, the birth anniversary of second President of India Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan that is celebrated as teachers' day.

Around 5 lakh teachers, including those on contract, have vowed to wear black badges and boycott teachers' day events organised by the government this year.

The state celebrates teachers' day every year in a grand way with the main event in Patna attended by the chief minister, the education minister and education department officials.

The state also felicitates teachers from government schools and district education officers on the occasion.

Similarly events are also held in district and block levels, which teachers and students attend.

"We have decided to boycott government events on the teachers' day," Bihar Madhyamik Sikshak Sangh president and MLC Kedar Pandey said on Sunday.

"On one hand the government will felicitate teachers in Patna and on the other government representatives will argue against teachers' demands in the Supreme Court on the same day," he pointed out.

The contract teachers' demand of equal pay for equal work is sub-judice and the hearing is on in the case in the Supreme Court.
