Patna, Nov. 21: Individuals who have paid their professional tax to respective urban local bodies for the current fiscal (2011-12) would have to pay it again to the commercial taxes department by November-end.
The amount paid earlier to the urban local body would be adjusted from the holding tax in the next fiscal (2012-13).
A directive in this regard was issued after a review meeting held today to assess the progress made in collecting professional taxes. Deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi, who also holds the commercial taxes department portfolio, chaired the meeting.
According to the earlier act, urban local bodies were supposed to collect the professional tax from persons coming under the ambit of the statute. In May this year, the commercial taxes department was, however, given the power to collect the tax. The cabinet approved the rules for implementing the revised act in August. Till October, the commercial taxes department has collected Rs 11.89 crore. This was revealed at today’s meeting.
Modi took exception to reports from the field that suggested people were facing problems in registering themselves with the commercial taxes department for paying professional tax. He directed the officials to ensure hassle-free registration and follow the rules while allotting registration numbers. According to the rule, the digit 10 would be suffixed to the tax deduction account number and permanent account number of a salaried and a non-salaried individual, respectively, to arrive at the unique registration number.
