Tactic tweak: BJP eyes poor Muslims

The BJP seems to be trying to reach out to voters who hitherto did not figure in its strategy, at a time when political opponents are busy devising strategies to check the party's ascendancy in the country.

The BJP seems to be trying to reach out to voters who hitherto did not figure in its strategy, at a time when political opponents are busy devising strategies to check the party's ascendancy in the country.

The BJP in Bihar is eying inroads into the backward Muslims, in line with its national executive resolutions adopted in Bhubaneswar.

The BJP's state executive meeting is scheduled to be held on May 2 and 3 in Kishanganj, the only district in Bihar where Muslims form around two-third of the population and where the party has traditionally struggled.

"Kishanganj provides an ideal platform for launching our drive to reach out to the poor Muslims, as suggested by our leader Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Bhubaneswar meet. The details of the strategy would be worked out during the state level meet there," a senior BJP functionary said.

Kishanganj and adjoining districts are hungry for development and hence it would be easier for the party to reach out to the poor Muslims in the region, the leader said.

"It is a fact that poor Muslims in Bihar are facing problems like unemployment and lack of education," said BJP state unit president Nityanand Rai. "We stand for making them aware of the various welfare schemes which the Narendra Modi government has launched for such people." Amid this strategy fine tuning, the BJP state unit is also trying to make the first meeting of the state executive - after Rai drafted a new team - a grand affair. BJP national president Amit Shah has been invited for the meet but the confirmation from his office was still awaited, sources revealed. "Presence of our national president, who at present is busy galvanising the party in Bengal, would be a big morale booster for our party workers. That is why we have sent an invitation to him," said a BJP insider.

Even if Shah does not attend the Kishanganj meet, he is scheduled to visit Bihar in June first week (June 2 to 4, said party sources).

The BJP's Bihar in-charge Bhupendra Yadav and national joint general secretary Saudan Singh have confirmed their participation for the Kishanganj meet, it is learnt.

"All the BJP leaders from Bihar who are part of the central government too will attend the meet," said a BJP source.

A senior leader hinted that the party could decide during Kishanganj meet to launch a major offensive against the Nitish Kumar government.

"The BJP does want to send a strong message to the Nitish Kumar government that it would not sit silently and would launch a major offensive against it highlighting its failures," said a BJP leader. "The state executive may decide a date to launch such a programme in October or November as right now the party workers are busy in strengthening the grassroots organisation by constituting its booth level committees afresh."
