Gaya: Gaya district and sessions judge Virendra Patwari summoned senior Punjab cop Parampal Singh on Saturday in connection with the officer's alleged fake degree from Magadh University.
Singh, currently posted as Amritsar (rural) senior superintendent of police, had been charge-sheeted under different sections of the Indian Penal Code. Singh is alleged to have obtained his job on basis of the contentious degree.
Public prosecutor Sartaj Ali Khan said the court's summons has been issued to Singh through the Punjab DGP. The court has directed Singh to present himself in court on May 19 following a hearing of the petition filed by the public prosecutor.
In April 2014, the Magadh University had suspended the controversial degree issued to the cop on the basis of an internal inquiry. The university had come across documentary evidence that disproved the officer's claim of admission and examination at Magadh University.
Punjab cadre IPS officer Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh had also conducted an inquiry. Kunwar, after scanning the relevant records - both in Magadh University and the Punjab government, had indicted Singh and recommended registration of a criminal case against him on fraud charges.
Sources said the Magadh University would soon approach the Patna High Court to move to cancel the degree issued in Singh's name.
