Patna, Jan. 10: Not finding any help in her own state for over half a decade, Jharkhand’s Sushma Baraik today approached Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar at his janata darbar for justice.

A TV channel on July 31, 2005 telecast footages of Baraik in a compromising position with P.S. Natarajan, then IG, as part of a sting operation. Over five years on, Baraik today wept in front of the Bihar chief minister bitterly, saying that she fears for her life.

Hailing from Gumla district of Jharkhand, Baraik requested Nitish to tell his counterpart in Jharkhand to give her protection.

Nitish said he would ask his counterpart in Jharkhand, Arjun Munda, to look into the matter.

“We will request the Jharkhand government to look into the case. We really cannot do anything, as this is a matter of a different state. But if it is necessary, the central home department will be intimated and they will be requested to take some action,” Nitish said.

Natarajan is on suspension but has been released on bail. The case is on.

Sushma alleged that she was falsely accused of being a Maoist last year by Jharkhand police and men deputed for her protection were taken back.

“I am getting a lot of threats and my life is in danger. Everyone knows my case and what I have gone through. My security cover, consisting of a home guard, a bodyguard and a constable, has been removed. I am running from one place to another to hide. I request the Bihar chief minister to help me,” she said.

Gumla superintendent of police Narendra Kumar Singh had a different story to tell. “The police have documentary evidence against her being the chief of Jharkhand Army, a gang of criminals who operate as Maoists in Gumla district,” said Singh.

“In July last year, the police arrested one Raghu, an active member of the Jharkhand Army. Based on his tip off, the police had arrested five to six more men and a huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered. During the interrogation, Raghu said Sushma was the leader of the gang. But she being a ‘high-profile’ woman, the police could not take any action her. She took out the mobile phone details of Raghu, which showed that he was always talking to Sushma. After getting these evidence, we prayed for a warrant against her in the court and the chief judicial magistrate issued a warrant against her,” Singh told The Telegraph.

“Once this happened, her security cover was withdrawn. The police will file a chargesheet against her soon. She had filed for an anticipatory bail in the Jharkhand High Court but that was rejected. She lives at DSP Road area in Gumla with her mother and sister. He father lives in Dhanbad,” he added.
