A spurt in violence inside and outside Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU) left students and teachers in a huff.

Chhatra Sangharsh Samity, a students’ body of TMBU, on Tuesday indulged in heavy stone-pelting at the university, along with members of All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (Aidso), All India Students’ Association (Aisa) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

The students were protesting against Monday’s incident in which at least six student activists suffered injuries in a clash with university employees. A day later, the student activists tried to shut down the colleges under TMBU and the university’s administrative building. Though no one was hurt till the filing of the report, the university incurred heavy losses because of damage to windowpanes and other equipment.

The incident occurred when police tried to clear a road blockade put up by the student bodies in front of the varsity on Tuesday afternoon. More than hundred students had blocked the University Road in protest against Monday’s incident. The students managed to shut down TNB College, Marwari College, Sundarwati Mahila College, BN College and TNB Law College on Tuesday.

On Monday, members of different students’ organisations tried to intrude into the varsity’s syndicate meeting. A group of students also staged a dharna near the main gate of the building so that not a single member of the syndicate could enter for the meeting.

The erring students claimed that there was rampant corruption in the TMBU administration, many colleges could not provide marksheets of BA Part-III examination and there was delay in conducting students’ council meetings. Some students wanted to hand over a memorandum to the vice-chancellor (VC) of the university, N.K. Verma, stating their demands.

“However, we were allegedly chased out by university employees, who beat us up,” said Ajit Kumar Sonu, the co-ordinator of Chhatra Sangharsh Samity. Aisa state president Rinki said: “The way the VC’s musclemen chased us out it seemed they were after our lives. This is a matter of concern.”

The VC, on the other hand, lambasted the students. “The students tried to rough me up after entering my chamber. On Monday, they sneaked inside the administrative building and went on a rampage. They broke valuable items of the university. On Tuesday, they again damaged property by pelting stones,” Verma said.
