Darbhanga, Feb. 6: An adolescent girl (15), from the Jale area of the district is undergoing treatment for burns at Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) after two young girls threw acid at her yesterday.
An FIR was lodged in this connection at Jale Thana today. Raids are being conducted to nab the two girls who have been identified.
The station house officer of Jale police station, Janardan Singh, said: "FIR No. 19/2016 has been registered on the statement of the victim . Both the accused are absconding."
He added that the two accused are residents of Jale Haat locality. One of them is a 17-year-old Intermediate student, while the other is 14-year-old student of Class IX. According to SHO Singh, fathers of both the accused were quizzed but they claimed to be clueless about the whereabouts of the girls.
According to sources, one is a student of Basant High School near Jale whereas the other is a student of Kazi Ahmad College of Jale. The victim is a resident of Mushhar Toli near Kazi Ahmad College. The two accused lured the victim to a secluded place near an abandoned brick kiln. Thereafter, the two girls poured acid on her face. Sources added that the two also tried to smash the victim's face with a brick.
Some people rushed to the spot after hearing the girl's cries. But by then the two girls had fled. The victim also corroborated the story to the police in the referral hospital of Jale, where she was first admitted. According to the victim, she knew the attackers but is not aware of the motive.
The senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Darbhanga, A.K. Satyarthi, said the motive of the attack was yet to be ascertained. "There is no trace of any sexual attack on the victim. But we are more concerned about the availability of products like acid. All the SHOs have been told to compile a list of chemical stores providing acids to college labs, shops selling inverter batteries and other probable source. Once the list is drawn up, we will undertake measures about the quantity of sale," he said.
The SSP added that a report, including a copy of the FIR, will be sent to the Bihar State Legal Service Authority, Darbhanga, by tomorrow so that compensation could be given to victim as per a Supreme Court directive. A bench of the apex court comprising M.Y. Eqbal and C. Nagappan had issued a direction in December last year to states to include acid attack victims in the disability list so that various benefits could be provided. The court was hearing a case of an acid attack victim of Bihar.
