Students in the city’s different institutions pulled out all the stops to make Teachers’ Day last week an event to remember.

From seeking the blessings of teachers to expressing their gratitude, the students did it all.

At Cimage College, the students put tilak on their teachers’ foreheads and touched their feet.

Amit Singh, a third-year student of bachelor of business management, said the cultural programme was in the works at the institution for two weeks before September 5.

The cultural programme started with Ganpati vandana after which the students garlanded Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s picture. College chairman Basant Agrawal also cut a cake.

Addressing the students, he said: “Teachers dispel darkness from our lives by enlightening us with education. In Indian culture, a teacher equals the Almighty. They put the society’s foundation stone. Students should try to grasp as much knowledge as they can from their teachers.”

Megha Agrawal, the institute’s director, said: “A teacher is happy when s/he gets a student who can imbibe knowledge. I wish teachers of this college get such students who can use their knowledge to the most extent.”

She also asked the students to work towards improving their personality.

“Participate in sports, extra-curricular activities, speech and debate. These would help you to develop your personality,” she advised the students.

Light of wisdom

A cultural programme was the highlight of Teachers’ Day celebration at St Xavier’s College of Education on Friday.

The BEd and MEd students danced and presented skits among other acts before their teachers at the college auditorium. Khagaria MP Mehboob Ali Kaiser graced the occasion as the chief guest.

Kicking off the day’s programme was a tribal dance presented by the BEd students. Among the other attractions included a skit (Nari Shiksha Ka Mahatva), a Bengali song (Ai Aamar Guru) and Bhojpuri dance.

The MEd department also performed a skit, Nari Shashaktikaran.

MP Kaiser said: “Teachers are role models for their students who try to copy them in life. So, it’s important for teachers to be careful about what they are doing.”

The college principal, Thomas Perumalil, also congratulated his faculty members for their work and asked the students to do their bit by spreading the light of knowledge in society.

“Teaching is a profession with a difference because it makes students suitable for their jobs ,” he added.

Faculty members Preeti Sinha, Vijay Shree, Sushil Kumar, R.N. Roy Majumdar and Deep Kumar were also present at the event.

Blood ties

At Central University of Bihar, Teachers’ Day was celebrated with a difference.

A blood donation camp was organised on the central university’s Patna campus.

Setting an example for everybody on campus, vice-chancellor (VC) Debdas Banerjee and controller of examinations C.L. Prabhavathi donated blood.

Public relations officer, Central University of Bihar, Mohammad Mudassir Alam also donated blood. He later said the camp was held at the behest of Banerjee who wanted to make this year’s Teachers’ Day celebration meaningful.

Anjali, one of the students, said: “It was a great day indeed to learn from our teachers who, even in their ages, came forward to donate blood.”

VC Banerjee said the blood bank of Patna Medical College and Hospital conducted the camp on the university’s request. Alam added that the drive was extremely successful with enthusiastic participation from faculty members and students.

Banerjee urged the students to take lessons from the country’s first Vice-President, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

It is in the vice-president’s memory that Teachers’ Day is celebrated every year on September 5, Radhakrishnan’s birthday.
