Student leaders pad up to make political debut - Resumes of youth wing members flood party offices; Congress biggest draw for young guns

Patna, Sept. 20: Several student leaders from Patna are hoping to make their political debut this Assembly election.

All major parties in the state, including the JD(U), BJP RJD, LJP and Congress — have promised to give maximum representation to youngsters in the Assembly elections.

Swadesh Kumar, state president of Chhatra RJD, is expecting a party ticket from Madhepura. He said: “I have submitted my bio data to Lalu ji. I want to contest from Madhepura constituency.”

Kumar said the RJD central committee had promised to allot 30 per cent seats to youngsters, including 10 per cent seats to members from Chhatra RJD. A decision to this effect was taken at a central committee meeting on September 13.

Several other candidates from RJD’s students wing have also submitted their resumes to Lalu Prasad.

An LLB student from Patna Law College, Dharmendra Paswan, has sought the party ticket from Makdumpur seat in Jehanabad district. Ramashankar Rai has sought a ticket from Meenapur constituency in Muzaffarpur while Dhananjay Yadav has sought and RJD ticket from Daraundha constituency in Siwan district.

Students wing of JD(U) and BJP are also hoping to see some union leaders in political fray. JD(U) youth general secretary Rakesh Kumar, a student of Patna University, has submitted his resume for a ticket from Sonepur consti-tuency. Rakesh told The Telegraph: “I have served the JD(U) for years and have always stood behind Nitishji and Sharadji.”

Rajiv Ranjan Patel, state JD(U) youth vice-president has sought party ticket from Islampur constituency under Nalanda district while former national president of Chhatra JD(U) Pratush Nandan alias Banti has sought ticket from a constituency in Patna district.

The Youth Congress is also not left behind. Sources said the youth wing is expecting around 50 to 60 seats for their members. Bihar Youth Congress president Lallan Kumar said: “It is the dream of Rahul Gandhi to see more youths join politics.”
