Patna: Assembly Speaker Vijay Kumar Chaudhary on Sunday launched My Life Struggle, Swami Sahajanand Saraswati's autobiography translated into English, in Patna.
Saraswati's autobiography, Mera Jeevan Sangharsh, was released in 1952. Walter Hauser, professor of South Asian history at Virginia University and Kailash Chandra Jha, political adviser in the American embassy, have translated the work to reach out to the non-Hindi speakers.
Chaudhary said: "He inspired millions of people. Swami ji was not only the first peasant leader of modern India but one who for the first time recognised the political potential of the farmers' cause. At that time there were only two internationally recognised political figures in the country - Mahatma Gandhi and Sahajanand Saraswati."
Social reformer and freedom fighter, Saraswati formed the All India Kisan Sabha in 1936. It turned out to be an important peasant movement in the history of the country's freedom struggle and demanded the abolition of the then oppressive zamindari system.
Jha said: "We translated Saraswati's personal anecdotes into English to reach to non-Hindi speaking people, and to circulate his ideals throughout the world."
