Patna, Feb. 22: The state government has ordered an inquiry into an attack on the Mahania police station and the subsequent police firing, which left at least two persons critically injured on Tuesday.
The injured persons, including 18-year-old Sonu Kumar and two journalists of a vernacular daily, were admitted to a private nursing home for treatment. Photo journalist Narendra Singh and reporter Arun Kumar are said to be out of danger.
Chief minister Nitish Kumar took stock of the situation arising out of an attack on the police station by a violent mob protesting the murder of a local businessman Sunil Jaiswal in Kaimur district on Monday evening. He summoned chief secretary Anup Mukherjee and director-general of police (DGP) Neel Mani to get details of the incident.
The chief minister directed inspector-general (Patna zone) Bhrigu Srinivasan and commissioner K.P. Ramaiyya to visit the spot and send a detailed report within 24 hours.
“The accused in the incident will not be spared,” Nitish said after reviewing the law and order situation in Kaimur district, situated on the Bihar-UP border.
Neel Mani told The Telegraph the two government officers air dashed to Mohania on Tuesday evening. DIG, Shahabad range, Sushil Khopde has also been asked to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident and submit a report at the earliest.
The situation took an ugly turn after a group of residents forced the shopkeepers to shut their business establishments as mark of protest against the murder of Jaiswal, a wholesale dealer of sugar, who was shot dead while returning home after closing his godown around 8.30pmon Monday.
The police intervened and chased the protesters, who regrouped after a while and attacked the police station. Some policemen sustained serious injuries in stone-pelting. The police later used force to disperse the protesters, who made an attempt to set the police station on fire.
Though DGP Neel Mani denied the report of firing by the police and bullet injury to any journalist, eyewitnesses said the police fired at least 50 rounds in the air to quell the rampaging mob.
Two persons, including Sonu Kumar, received bullet injuries in the incident, they said.
Jaiswal, a wholesale dealer of sugar, fell prey to the bullets of the anti-socials only 20 yards away from his house at Storeganj under Mohania police station.
