Munger: Six members of a family, who had gone hungry for three days, were given food and cash by the district administration on Saturday.

The head of the family, Raj Kumar Singh (40), who is a beggar, is ailing with liver disease and could not go out for three days.

The family, which lives in Kalyan Tola under Binda diara panchayat of Bariarpur block, has four children below eight years old.

When district magistrate (DM) Anand Sharma came to know of their plight, he directed sub- divisional officer (SDO), sadar, Khagesh Chandra Jha and Bariarpur block development officer (BDO) Rakesh Kumar to help the family.

"As soon as I came to know of the beggar's suffering, I directed the SDO sadar and the Bariarpur BDO to provide assistance to the family. They received foodgrain, including 50 kg of wheat and rice each and Rs1,500 from BDO Rakesh Kumar," said Anand.

Raj said: "My family was displaced owing to erosion by the Ganga at Kalyan Tola in 1999. We moved to Punjab to earn a livelihood. When my condition became serious and I was not able to work as a labourer, I returned to the village and began begging. I stopped begging for three days when my condition deteriorated. The administration's quick assistance saved our lives."
