Gaya, May 15: The owner of the shop in Jehananbad that sold sattu to labourers, 10 of whom died after consuming it, was detained on Tuesday.
Jehanabad superintendent of police (SP) Harpreet Kaur said: “A sample of the sattu (roasted gram flour) from the shop has been sent to Patna for forensic tests. It had a foul odour.”
Kaur added that Kunti Devi, the shop owner, had used water from a nearby well to mix the sattu. “A sample of water from the well has also been sent to the Patna laboratory. The water was malodorous,” the SP said.
Jehanabad district magistrate (DM) Bala Murugan D. handed over a cheque of Rs 1 lakh each to the kin of the deceased labourers, who died on Monday. The bereaved were also provided Rs 10,000 under the Family Welfare Scheme and Rs 1,500 under the Kabeer Anteyashti Scheme.
The DM has assured that the families of the deceased would be provided all help including aid for the education of the children of the dead labourers. Jehanabad sadar sub-divisional officer Ram Niranjan Singh said Rs 1.5 lakh each for the deceased has also been recommended under the provisions of the disaster management scheme.
Ten labourers have died after they ate sattu between 1.30pm and 2pm on Monday. While nine had died till Monday night, one died on Tuesday morning.
