Patna University has decided on Tuesday to change the semester promotion system with minimum 75 per cent attendance and 45 per cent marks in six papers.

Changing its earlier ordinance, which had different rules for promotion of students to the next semester, the university administration has decided that those students with minimum 75 per cent attendance have appeared in continuous internal assessment examination or have appeared in the external assessment would be promoted to the next semester.

In a decision that was taken on Tuesday, all promotion rules floated earlier have been replaced as a student has to appear in continuous internal assessments and end semester tests.

Patna University vice-chancellor Arun Kumar Sinha said: “The new rules have been made to provide relief to students so that most of the students get promotion to the next semester.”

The university has also decided that out of 12 papers that the student has to study in three semesters, a student has to get 40 per cent marks minimum in at least six separate papers. However, the students should score minimum 45 per cent marks in aggregate in these six papers.

Sinha added: “Though the student getting pass marks in six papers out of 12 will be promoted to the fourth semester, the student has to clear all 16 papers in the fourth semester.” A semester of six-month duration comprises four papers in each semester and the two-year course or four semesters consists of 16 papers.
