Jairam's lecture

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, on Sunday, delivered the 4th Pradhan Jwala Prasad Memorial Lecture on Growth counts, environment matters.

The event was organised by Pradhan JP Trust.

Ramesh gave reasons why India should not neglect its environment issue. By 2050 the population of India which stands at 125 crore will increase to 170 crore.

The average age of India in later years would be between 26 to 28 years. This growing and younger population is thirsty for consumption.

Climatic change of the country is a reality. Almost 60 per cent of the agriculture is dependent on monsoon rain. 'So we are most vulnerable to disasters or calamities' he said.

'Public health is a major issue. The depletion on natural resources is also a problem. Pollution is causing cardio vascular diseases and the public is becoming susceptible to cancer. These health expenditures are also leading the people of rural areas to become poor,' he said.
