The CBSE Class IX students failing to appear in the Summative Assessment-I would get another chance by October 31 this year.

The board has decided to allow Class IX and X students to appear in Summative Assessment-I if they miss it because of illness or taking part in sports events — national or international. The new move would be implemented from the 2013-14 academic session.

It has become mandatory for Class IX and X students to appear in both the Summative Assessments (SA) — SA-I and SA-II. Till now, if a student missed SA-I, he/she could still take the SA-II and clear that academic year.

Under the revised rule, if a Class IX student falls ill and fails to appear in SA-I, he/she can do so by October 31. A provision for students, who miss SA-II, to take the exam is already provided by the CBSE. It has to be availed of by March 31.

This year, SA-I is scheduled in September in most schools.

Earlier, the CBSE had no system of providing students another chance to take Summative Assessments. The student could still take SA-II but miss out on the SA-I marks.

Teachers in the city schools are happy with the CBSE’s move to provide students a second chance.

May Flower School vice-principal P.S. Ambastha said: “Earlier, if a student did not appear for SA-I because of illness or any national or international sporting event, he/she was not required to appear for it again. But now, after the CBSE’s announcement, we can provide students another chance to score more in the Summa- tive Assessments.”

Since the decision has to be implemented in the 2013-14 academic session, the second chance would be applicable for the Class IX students this year.

From the next academic session, students of both classes IX and X would get a second chance in case they miss SA-I.

The students, who would benefit from the board’s initiative, are glad.

Class IX student of Patna Central School Shubhangi said: “This is good news. Of course, nobody looks forward to falling ill before examinations but in case I fall ill during Summative Assessment-I, I can get another chance to score. I would not have to suffer.”

Suman Kant Bharati, a Class VIII student of Gyan Niketan, said: “It is a good move taken by the CBSE. I am happy that I will get a second chance to take SA-I in case I fall ill next year.”

Waiver

Students taking part in national or international sports events conducted by recognised federations or the CBSE, would be allowed to skip any one of the Summative Assessments (SA-I or SA-II) if their event and the examination coincide. They would have to seek prior approval for it.
